Torbreck The Struie
The Struie is another one of the values to be had from this producer.
The name Struie originates from a mountain in the rugged highlands of north-east Scotland, which overlooks Torbreck forest near Inverness. The view from the Struie down across the Dornoch Firth is as inspiring as that of the Valley floor from the Barossa Ranges. While the Eden Valley region is most associated with the white wine variety, Riesling, it also produces elegant, tautly structured Shiraz which is highly prized by winemakers. This Torbreck Shiraz cuvée is a skilful blend of fruit from a single vineyard Eden Valley Shiraz and old vine Shiraz from the Barossa Valley’s Western Ranges – a marriage of elegance and intensity. It is a high-altitude area of between 400 and 500 metres, compared with the Barossa Valley’s elevation of 200 to 300 metres. This higher altitude and 1 to 2 weeks later ripening pattern results in more distinctive varietal flavour characteristics, lower pH and higher acidities. While the Eden Valley region is most associated with the white wine variety, Riesling, it also produces elegant, tautly structured Shiraz which is highly prized by winemakers. This Torbreck Shiraz cuvée is a skilful blend of fruit from a 40 year old Eden Valley Shiraz vineyard and an 80 year old Barossa Shiraz vineyard – a marriage of elegance and intensity.
"Very deep, bright, youthful purple/red colour. Rich, ripe blood plums to sniff. Subtle flecks of fresh-turned earth and ironstone. A hint of licorice. It's full-bodied and fleshy, soft and supple, with lovely extract and weight in the mouth without heaviness. There is concentration and drive in the mid-palate, and a solid tannin grip to conclude—all in balance. Black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate linger on and on. (Only 20% Eden Valley this year due to very low crops)" 94 pts, Huon Hooke
"A bold Struie with only a small inclusion of Eden Valley material, this has rich, blackberry and tar aromas, as well as a herbal edge. Very fleshy palate with long, fully formed tannins carrying blackberry and toasty oak spice at the finish. Drink or hold." 92 pts, James Suckling
"From vines averaging 50yo, 92% from Barossa Valley western ranges, 8% from Eden Valley. Matured 20 months in 20% new French oak barrels. A show stopper. Profound, luminescent black purple. A compact, dense singularity of satsuma plum, blackberry and licorice, framed in a confidently hewn shell of fine, mineral tannins and well-executed dark chocolate and coffee bean oak. Coiled up tight, all it asks for is time to unravel and build on the finish." 93 pts, Tyson Stelzer, Halliday
"Always a blend of fruit from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Torbreck's 2019 The Struie is almost entirely Barossa Valley, with only 8% coming from the Eden Valley. Aged in 20% new French oak for 20 months, it's very dark in the glass, with aromas of pencil shavings, blueberries and baking spices. Fullbodied and even more intense than the impressive 2018, it remains supple and smooth from start to finish, where hints of licorice and warmth emphasize the wine's ripeness." 94 pts, Joe Czerwinski, WA
