South Africa

Concentrated in the south-western tip of the country, wine making was introduced to South Africa in the mid 17th century.

South Africa’s wines are named by the grape variety so very easy to understand. Chenin Blanc is South Africa’s flagship white varietal, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Colombard. Red wine vine planting has increased, with Cabernet Sauvignon taking the lead, after that Syrah, Pinotage and Merlot. Pinotage is a South African cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. If a South African wine label reads Shiraz, then it is Syrah in a new world style.
