12X Castello Romitorio Chianti Colli Senesi, 2017
It’s gloriously rich, ripe and lively, crammed with redcurrants, blackberries and sour black cherries.
"I’ve lost count of the number of crap Chiantis I’ve encountered in my quest to find something halfway toothsome. I’d happily spend the evening with the 2017 Castello Romitorio Chianti Colli Senesi, though, a wine of real style from an estate owned by the great neo-expressionist painter and sculptor Sandro Chia and run by his son Filippo. Made from old vine Sangiovese grown in the hills around Montalcino, it’s gloriously rich, ripe and lively, crammed with redcurrants, blackberries and sour black cherries. £14.50 down from £15.50."
Jonathan Ray, Spectator Wine
"Smelling this transports you to the ochre-colored Tuscan countryside: the scent of the sun-dried earth and the oak forest is right there with the characteristically tangy Marasca cherry note of Sangiovese."
Anne Krebiehl MW
Chianti Colli Senesi is an illustrious example of the classic Tuscan winemaking tradition. It is a Sangiovese with distinct character, which expresses the elegance of grapes cultivated in the hills around Siena. The rolling Colli Senesi (hills of Siena) are noted for their rivers and thick oak forests, and are a patchwork of small medieval towns, fields, vineyards and olive groves. The Chianti Colli Senesi appelation covers a vast area of cool-climate southern Tuscany, which has remained surprisingly pristine for centuries.
