12X Villa Sparina Montej Rosso DOC, 2018
It’s eminently drinkable and if you’re new to Barbera, think Merlot and you’ll love it.
"The Villa Sparina Montej Rosso is made entirely from Barbera, a grape which originated in Piedmont and is now the third most widely planted red grape in the country. It’s high in acidity, low in tannin and deliciously fresh, juicy, soft and plummy. Laden with raspberries, it’s eminently drinkable and if you’re new to Barbera, think Merlot and you’ll love it. £14.30 down from £15.30."
Jonathan Ray, Spectator Wine
Founded by the Moccagatta family in the 1970's in the hamlet of Monterotondo, Villa Sparina comprises 100 hectares of land, 70 of which are cultivated with local grapes for the production of Gavi and Barbera wine. The unique and eye-catching bottle shape corresponds to the Roman amphorae found in the truffle-rich grounds.
Monferrato is a violet and berry-scented Barbera which packs a powerful juicy punch on the palate backed by supple tannins and a refreshing burst of controlled acidity. This a great all-rounder red that deserves to be enjoyed more frequently.
