Romain Taupenot continues to oversee the inexorable climb of this fantastic domaine, now indisputably in the premier league, whilst still offering excellent value to the collector. The ninth generation to lead the domaine alongs with his sister Virginie, Romain remembers assisting his grandfather in the harvest and selling their wines on the route national to holiday makers journeying to the sunshine in the south of France. After a successful career in finance, he returned to the Cote d'Or to take the reins and hasn't looked back since!
He crafts wines of structure, clear terroir expression, and complexity from an exciting array of vineyards, and the wines are high class examples of their appellations. He is a self-proclaimed “lazy winemaker” putting his efforts into the land in order to reduce the amount of intervention in the wines – a wise choice that is reflected in their rich expression and depth. They spend 12-14 months in the barrel, using 30 percent new wood for his village wines and increasing the amount as they span from Premier to Grand Cru. Their holdings include Nuits-St-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, St-Romain and Auxey-Duresses. They are also one of the few estates to vinify separately their vines in the Grand Crus of Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin, the latter of which is unsurprisingly “one of the finest in Morey-Saint-Denis" according to Neal Martin.
Commanding a devoted following from collectors and critics alike, Decanter's Bruce Sanderson declares that Taupenot Merme's "style of wines focuses on elegance and purity. They can be firm in their youth, with good tannic support, yet age gracefully as the tannins round and the sweet core of the fruit emerge”. From Bourgogne Rouge up to Clos des Lambrays & Mazoyères-Chambertin, there is plenty to enjoy from this dynamic domaine.
