The USA has survived several setbacks in its wine producing life: prohibition in 1930s, using native grape varieties, etc. Since it’s been planting the European Vitis vinifera, wine is now made in every state so the USA is currently the 4th largest wine producing country, with California making 89% of its production.
Zinfandel was California’s signature grape and, with DNA testing, disappointment abounded that this was not an indigenous cultivar, but in fact Italy’s Primitivo with a different name. All international varieties, both red and white, are grown.
