Smooth Red

The Foxglove range of wines from twin brothers Jim and Bob Varner are excellent value for such great quality wines. Bob is the winemaker and claims simplicity is the key to a great wine, letting the perfect fruit speak for itself. The Foxglove range is from Paso Robles in Central Coast, California.

“A rich, boisterous wine, the 2013 Zinfandel literally jumps from the glass with exuberant, racy red fruits. Ageing in steel keeps the flavors bright, focused and floral throughout. Drink this vinous Zinfandel over the next few years, while the fruit remains vibrant.”
Antonio Galloni (July 2015)

Jim and Bob Varner are really hitting their stride, with lots of great reviews from critics and clients, who only need to try their wines once to become converts!  I think three factors particularly contribute to their success:  The selection of really good quality, ripe but never over-ripe fruit; eschewing the use of new oak entirely, so really encouraging the natural spice and sweet berry, cherry flavours of the Zin to come to the fore without being smothered in the vanilla custard that often results from new American barriques; and finally, the price - in a world where so often U.S. wines are split sharply between the supermarket bottom shelf and $200 Napa icon Cabernets, the Foxglove wines offer a brilliant third option.

Absolutely fantastic. Varner have a philosophy of picking their grapes early to give some restraint and to emphasise the aromatics. The result is a cracking fruit forward Zinfandel showing classic brambly fruit with soft sweet tannins. A great crowd pleasing wine & would pair beautifully with pan seared Duck Breast.

Varner Winery

After lavishing his attention on icon wines high up in the Santa Cruz mountains, Jim Warner comes down to Paso Robles, Central Coast, California where the Foxglove range of wines comes from Jim’s twin brother, Bob, is the winemaker. Bob’s ethos is to let the fruit do the talking. Simplicity is the key and he claims if you start with perfect fruit, then the winemaking needs minimal intervention. The Foxglove range is getting a fine reputation for superb quality price ratio. Others in the range are Zinfandel and Chardonnay.
