In Session 8 we leave the Old World fully for the first time and highlight South Africa. In its early days, the wines were responsible for filling our supermarket trolley with cheap and cheerful wines. However, it is a country with a venerable wine heritage and an evolution in winemaking is giving rise to wines that challenge, stylistically and qualitatively, the best of the Old World – and beats all but a rare few on price.

First up is an impressive Chenin Blanc from the renowned Jordan winery. South African is a huge champion of the Chenin grape that thrives in the microclimate of the Cape, producing a range of styles from dry and flinty almost Chablis-like to the more voluptuous and ripe styles but always brimming with stone fruits on the palate.

Next up a Pinot Noir from the Chamonix winery which has some of the highest planted vines in the Cape Winelands. The fickle pinot noir grape has found a second home here after Burgundy as the climate and soils are too its liking, producing wines with real character, not overripe and soupy as can often be the case for New World Pinots. The pinot noir grape is so at here that several eminent Burgundian winemakers have come to the region to make high-quality pinot. This example will highlight the quality that the Franschhoek region of the Cape can achieve and show that it is capable of ageing, coming from the excellent 2016 vintage.

To close out the evening we will sample a fascinating Bordeaux blend wine from the Tokara vineyards in Stellenbosch. This wine is another example as to why we consider the region to be the new “old world”. The Directors reserve is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon blended with the usual suspects from Bordeaux of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc to create a plush and polished wine that offers complexity and brilliant purity of fruit. Once again we have chosen a wine from the 2016 vintage to highlight how well these wines can age.
