Wine Therapy 11th June: Around the World in 48 Wines 9: Crikey! - Terroir in Australia
Ticket price includes the three bottles, joining instructions and Zoom meeting link (this will be emailed prior to the event) and the subsequent 1-hr YouTube recording. For many of us Australia has been go to wine for fruit and oak rich BBQ wines, when we need to keep the thirsty crowds fed and watered on a budget. However the last two decades have seen a revolution as a new generation of winemakers explore texture, purity and nuance rather than simplistic jammy fruit bombs and custardy whites. This session concentrates on artisan growers and up and coming regions that we feel better represent Australia’s exciting modern winescape. First up we have a lovely sharp and complex Chardonnay from the Ochotas, who are part of a new wave of Aussie producers trying to make wines with more elegance and balance – this is most definitely a fine wine but more drinkable than some of the Chardonnay blockbusters of the past that made the grape popular in Australia but spawned the ABC crowd. We then hop off the coast of Australia to the Island of Tasmania which has a wonderful cool climate and hence perfect for the fickle Pinot Noir grape. It does very well in Tasmania and indeed there is a large amount grown for the production of sparkling wines. The Devils Corner Pinto is created to be a fruit-driven drink-now style but due to the climate it has an ageing potential and capable of developing some complexity. We will close out the tasting with the red wine that arguably many associate with Australia – Shiraz. However, this is a wonderful example from Orange in NSW and is quite unique in style compared to most other regions in Australia and is more reminiscent of the Northern Rhone syrah.
