Albert Bichot Bourgogne Cote d'Or Pinot Noir 'Secret de Famille'
- Burgundy, France
Juicy redcurrant and cranberry fruit with great openness of fragrance, yet tension of structure – lovely acidic zing, then rather full body for Bourgogne. Finishes with charming earthy tones. A great advert for how ambitious Bourgogne can be.
All the fruit is sourced from sites across the Core de Nuits, which arguably Bichot could reflect on the label in order elevate the wine’s stature. Perhaps they choose not to so that expectations are exceeded as this medium-bodied charmer definitely over delivers. Raspberries, and pretty, petal aromas with a touch of greenery, give way to ripe red-fruits on the palate with a floral balsamic note on finish. Very quaffable but despite its elegance there is steel at the core and a lithe energy that drives the finish.
Always a super reliable, benchmark domaine, and well-priced, Clos Frantin’s 2017s continue a good run of form. We were also really impressed by a number of the Maison’s wines this year which have closed the gap with it’s flagship domaine whilst offering tremendous value. As Neal martin comments, Bichot can make “really quite delicious, complex wines that often surprise people in blind tastings when not swayed by the label.” We feel our selections, from village wines to the most senior Grand Crus, all show the precision, typicity and expressive, vibrant, phenolically mature fruit that make a case or two essential purchases for all Burgundy lovers.
