Always reliable, and well-priced, with a number of standout cuvees, Domaines Bichot continues its good run of form with 2018 vintage. The Premier and Grand Crus from Clos Frantin, the flagship domaine, and increasingly the maison itself, continue to produce benchmark wines which offer real value and character, whist Domaine Pavillon’s Beaune Clos des Mouches’, is the white Burgundy of choice for the cognoscenti. As Neal Martin comments, Bichot can make “really quite delicious, complex wines that often surprise people in blind tastings when not swayed by the label.” Once again our selections, from AOC Bourgogne to Richebourg, all show the precision, typicity and expressive, generous fruit expected of their level and mean there is something from the portfolio to suit all tastes and budgets. Head winemaker Alain Serveau is pleased that in 2018 the wines achieved sufficient concentration and structure whilst maintaining freshness and supple fruit.

"Despite Fixin’s modest reputation today, in 12th century the monks of Citeaux established the “Manoir de la Perriere” here, considering the soils to be of optimum quality, and as recently as 19th century “The Clos” was spoken of in the same breath as Chambertin. 50% whole bunch and 35% new oak. Deep, brambly nose, with earthy, tight berry fruit. Palate is rich, ripe and spicy, the new oak shows a little for now but there are juicy tannins and enough acidity to pull the wine into shape. This is really rather promising in a bold way." Tom, Wine Guru

"Cask sample. Mid purplish crimson. Rich nose reminiscent of dunked digestive biscuits. Very sweet palate entry is pretty charming. Lots of energy here. No shy retiring flower! Long and pretty hot on the end." 17/20, Jancis Robinson

"The 2018 Fixin Clos de la Perrière 1er Cru comes from the five-hectare monopole and was picked a little later than Bichot’s other crus, between September 10 and 12. It has a ripe, generous bouquet of macerated red cherries, wild strawberry and quince aromas that don’t hold back. The palate is well balanced with gutsy red berry fruit laced with sherbet and orange peel, and a little spice toward the succulent finish. There is a subtle headiness here, but I suspect it will be absolutely delicious after bottling." 90-92/100, Neal Martin, Vinous

"This is sizeable - and very reliable - cuvée in the Bichot portfolio, sourced from a large parcel of five hectares that covers three different terroirs. Fermented with 10% whole bunches and aged in 20% new wood, it's an aromatic, floral, textured Pinot Noir with appealing freshness and minerality and an undertone of noble reduction. Classy Fixin." 92/100, Tim Atkin MW
