Angus' Christmas Selection
To get you in the festive mood I have put together a fun mixed case featuring six bottles that'll I'll be sipping on over the Christmas period and so should you! First up, we have the divine Jordan Inspector Chenin from the masterful husband and wife team, Gary and Kathy Jordan which is all about freshness, balance and quaffabilty! Next, a cheeky Pecorino from La Torre del Nano which as Jonny Ray from the Spectator notes is 'Pecorino in all is unadulterated glory' I whole heartedly agree, I can't get enough of the stuff! My case wouldn't be complete without a white burg, so I've gone for the Pouilly Fuisse from Nadine Ferrand - I've long been a fan of her wines and the Pouilly Fuisse is just exceptional value and incredibly versatile when it comes to food pairing.
Right, on to the reds. I did say my case wouldn't be complete without a white burg, though I also quickly realised it wouldn't be complete without a red Burg too! I've gone for the Bichot Secret de Famille 2018 which is starting to drink very nicely indeed - lots of succulent red berry fruit, ample spice and a lovely savoury finish, one of the most underrated Bourgogne Rouge's...? I reckon so! Next, we have another husband and wife team, Francesco and Francesca from La Giaretta and their stunning Ripasso which I believe outperforms many the Amarone, though at a fraction of the price. The final red was a tough decision, but after much deliberation I've gone for a wine that is a staple in my wine rack all year round; the Foxglove Cab Sauv. This is just so appealing and sexy with ripe berry fruit, along with plum and cassis, a perfect match for your heartier dishes to get you through the winter months.
Jordan Inspector Péringuey Chenin Blanc, 2019 The juice was barrel-fermented in 228L second and third-fill Burgundian-shaped barrels, and matured sur lies in the barrel for 8 months with occasional barrel rolling to add richness to the palate. To accentuate the fresh citrus flavour, 50 % tank-fermented Chenin Blanc was blended with the barrel-fermented portion.
Domaine Nadine Ferrand Pouilly Fuisse 'Eclat d'Amonite', 2019 :"Smoky, citrus and pear skin nose with a touch of croissant almondine. Green, saline attack, slight oily mid-palate allied to good mineral structure but focussed and driven by fresh acids giving intensity and drive, with a taut, steely finish and mouth-watering crunchy acidity." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
La Torre Del Nano, Contetinelli Falerio Pecorino DOC, "Produced from organically-farmed vineyards near Offida, an exquisite town celebrated for its three-sided Piazza del Popolo and remarkable 700 year-old brick church, it’s aromatic and inviting on the nose and fresh and lively in the mouth." Jonathan Ray, The Spectator
Albert Bichot Bourgogne Cote d'Or Pinot Noir 'Secret de Famille', 2018 "All the fruit is sourced from sites across the Cote de Nuits, which arguably Bichot could reflect on the label in order to elevate the wine’s stature. Perhaps they choose not to so that expectations are exceeded as this medium-bodied charmer definitely over delivers. Bright and velvety red fruit and floral nose, leads to a juicy, succulent red berry led mid-palate with a salty lift on the finish. Great entry point Pinot." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
La Giaretta Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2018The two-year-long ageing process and the subsequent refinement in bottle (at least five/six months) confer a pleasant roundness and tertiary scents on the wine. Perfect for main courses with strong flavour and any kind of cold cuts. To fully enjoy its bouquet and flavour it should be served at a temperature of 18°C.
Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon, 2019:The Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon has a fruit-forward bouquet of berries, plum and cassis with a herbal undertone. On the palate, it is a medium-bodied rounded wine with well-integrated tannins and bags of fresh fruit. Exceptional value and downright scrumptious.
