93-point Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon "a bold, dramatic and compelling debut"
Ao Yun is a hugely ambitious, game-changing project from LMVH – who installed winemaker Maxence Dulou (formerly from their Quinault property in Saint Emilion) in the mountainous region of Yunnan, after four years of research by expert wine scientist Tony Jordan.  Jordan’s findings argued that summer in Northern China was too hot to produce wines of elegance, and in the south too wet to produce ripe grapes with structured tannins and good phenolic development.  South western Yunnan by comparison, with its high altitude, extreme diurnal temperature difference, and hilly terrain had all the elements needed to cultivate first class grapes.  Ao Yun (“Roaming Among the Clouds”) has 30 h/a of vines, below the sacred Meili Mountain, at heights reaching a dizzying 2600m, all farmed 100% organically and entirely by hand (or yak!).  An early convert on trying the inaugural vintage 2013 was no less than Jancis Robinson who said:  

“What I was tasting were wines most influenced by the pure vineyard characters. They were fully ripe but extremely well balanced with real, confident, unique personalities of their own.”  

Decanter have scored the wine 94 points, with editor in chief John Stimpfig calling it “a bold, dramatic and compelling debut", and Jancis’ tasting note continues “excellent, deep vibrant purplish crimson. Very intense with the exceptional clarity and intensity of a high-elevation wine like Ribera del Duero”.   As well as being the ultimate dinner party trump card in the blind tasting wine stakes, Ao Yun represents a paradigm shift as dramatic as Penfold’s Grange.  Whilst Monty Python may have lampooned the idea of a super-premium Australian wine (“kanga-rouge”, “1970 Coq du Rod Laver” and “Chateau Chunder”), single bottles of the first vintage of Grange, 1951, currently sell for $50,000 AUD.  With the sort of early critical support Ao Yun has already received it’s quite conceivable that these first vintages will become exceptionally collectable and thus eminently tradeable, especially as only 80-cases (480 bottles) have been released to the UK market of the total 2000-case production.

"This 2013 Ao Yun is a new star of China! The vineyard is backed by LVMH in Shangri-La, at the edge of the Himalayas. Cabernet Sauvignon dominates this wine with 90%, the other 10% is Cabernet Franc. 2013 is the first vintage. It is opaque, with a very deep ruby color. Elegant and restrained in style, it reveals scents of bell pepper, blackcurrant, prune and blackberry with subtle hints of dark chocolate, clove, tobacco and licorice. Refreshing on the palate, full-bodied and with very silky tannins, it has great concentration, perfect structure and a very long finish. Tasting date: May 17, 2017. "Aromas of blackberry, blueberry and olives. Hints of bark and mushroom. Currants. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. A lovely dark fruit undertone. Minerally and very fine. Made of cabernet sauvignon with a touch of cabernet franc. This is 28 hectares in total. The vines have 10 years. It’s all handmade. Beautiful structure and depth. This is a wine that really impresses with all the finesse and quality of tannins. Goes on for minutes. Better in 2020 but so fine now." 93 pts, James Suckling

Standard Delivery takes 2-3 working days and costs £7.50 for orders under £75. Orders over £75 are subject to FREE Standard Delivery. Standard and Express Delivery is available for most mainland UK postcodes as listed in our T&Cs.
Express Delivery costs £12.50. Express delivery orders over £75 are £5.
For Express Delivery (next working day) orders need to be placed before 1pm. Orders placed after 1pm will be received after two business days. Orders placed for next day delivery after 1pm on a Thursday will be delivered on Monday. Orders placed on a Bank Holiday will similarly be processed the day after the Bank Holiday and delivered the following day.
Same Day Delivery costs £20. This option is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 1pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). If ordered after 1pm, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. What a great way to get that wine to your office or home for the evening!

CLUB OFFERS
Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker.
