This has charm and character in spades.

Castello Romitorio was bought by the neo-expressionist artist Sandro Chia in 1984. The castle and surrounding vineyards were purchased for the price of a small collection of his paintings. The previous owner, art patron Giorgio Franchetti clearly valued his artwork dearly! With the renovation of the estate in the late 1980s, Chia put meticulous care into the cultivation of the vineyards. The micro-variations in terroir across the different plots were embraced to encourage unique expressions of Sangiovese across the estate. Sustainability farming and respect for the biodiversity of the environment were also of utmost importance.

This Chianti Colli Senesi is produced from grapes grown in the hills around Siena. The cool climate of this Southern Tuscany appellation produces wines of Burgundian-like elegance. Made from 100% Sangiovese, this wine spends only 10 months on oak to retain its fresh and crunchy cherry character.

Chianti is a famously food-friendly wine. Traditionally paired with meat or tomato-sauce pasta dishes, it also tastes delicious with a simple pizza supper.

"Smelling this transports you to the ochre-colored Tuscan countryside: the scent of the sun-dried earth and the oak forest is right there with the characteristically tangy Marasca cherry note of Sangiovese. The body has tension and shape without being heavy, there is freshness and bite: this was made for the table. This is pervasive and honest, has both impact and agility. The fruit -redcurrant, cranberry and Morello cherry- sings with purity on the finish. This has charm and character in spades."Anne Krebiehl MW
