Charlie's Christmas Selection
I wanted to showcase some of the lesser known pairings for your festive season, rather than sticking to the classics, whilst of course showing the breadth of the HG range we offer both Old World and New World . From the poorly understood Aligote of Burgundy to an Argentine Malbec but not as you have ever tasted this is a real case of discovery - sorry but poor puns are allowed as its Christmas!
Edouard Delaunay, Bourgogne Aligoté 2018 Beautiful pale yellow in colour boasting a gorgeous pure nose featuring expressive notes of stinging nettle, freshly cut herbs, a touch of lemon, mandarin, a basket of fruit. A taut, chiselled wine that is clean and extremely refreshing. Starts off fabulously on the palate, allying freshness and maturity with mineral notes of flint and a finish reminiscent of barley sugar.
Henschke Louis Eden Valley Semillon 2016:"This has attractive waxy lanolin, lemons too. Smooth palate; elegant, restrained and even." 90-91 pts, James Suckling
Romain Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Moulins 2019:"Every now and then you taste a wine that completely knocks you for six, leaving you standing there with a half-puzzled expression, eyes gazing reverently at the liquid in your glass. Such was at least my first experience tasting the incredible wines of Domaine Guiberteau of the Loire Valley. And with scores as high as 18 points from JancisRobinson.com, it is no wonder these wines are beginning to be noticed." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
PerSe Inseparable 2018 "Hand-picked, fermented in concrete and aged for 14 months in neutral French oak, this is a lifted and refined style of Malbec. Savoury aromas on the nose, with intense cassis, notes of cherries, spice and violets. Tightly coiled black fruit and fine-grained tannins on the palate, opening into intense black berry fruit, with juicy cherry notes, spice and savoury/gamey undertones, but with lovely freshness and a mineral backbone. From what Del Pópolo describes as 'a classic Mendoza vintage – warm and dry', this is an impressive inaugural vintage." 95 pts, Julie Sheppard, Decanter
La Giaretta Cor di Vin 95 Rosso 2015;The peculiarity of this wine is the drying on the vine: a late harvest. Start of the 15 months aging process in small French oak barrels. The chosen oak is a very special selection of woods from the best French forests (medium toast). Strongly oaked, it is a dry and smooth Italian red.
Cape Chamonix Feldspar Pinot Noir 2017:"Pinot at heart, the 2017 Feldspar Pinot Noir starts with aromas of soft herbs and orange zest that waft from the glass along with strawberry and cherry tones. In the mouth, the wine has brown baking spices from the oak, leading to a balanced and structured finish with good acidity, making this wine food-friendly." 90 pts, Anthony Mueller, WA
