2020, third Musketeer of that extremely successful vintage trilogy 2018, 2019, 2020. Its characteristics are a precocious vintage with severe dry periods. As a result of a rather dry and mild winter bud burst was two weeks early compared to 2019: the first buds came on 26 March for the Merlots ! This precocity was pushed forward with the fall of the first flowerhoods on 5 May. Then, the first half of May was relatively fresh and rainy. Verai- son began on 6 July and lasted 3-4 weeks for some parcels. During this same time, from 18 June to 12 August, so during almost 2 months, we suffered from a lack of water with high temperatures, so the vegetative cycle slowed down. Like for most of top level vintages, the whole crop took place in September. We began harvesting Merlots on September 14th and finished them on September 22nd; as well as Cabernets Sauvignons on September 24th until September 30th, Cabernets Francs on September 18th and Petits Verdots on September 21st. Superb Merlots, top quality Cabernets and Petits Verdots give this great vintage its roundness, richness, and elegance that represent the essence of the Pauillac terroir and the greatness of its grapes.
"This is classically structured with a wonderful finish of extremely polished tannins and an ultra long finish. So much blackcurrant, spice and cedar. Seamless. 70% cabernet sauvignon and 26% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot." 94-95 pts, James Suckling
"Takes its time to unroll then shows sweetness to the black cherry and brambled blackberries fruits, followed by cigar, pencil lead and crushed stone. This is signature Batailley in that it has that essence-of-Pauillac feel. A delicious wine, such a great great drinking claret, really one to look out for in this vintage; already looking forward to drinking this in 10 years time. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 60% new oak. A yield of 42hl/ha." 94 pts, Jane Anson, Decanter
"The 2020 Batailley is quintessential Pauillac on the nose of very focused black fruit infused with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Classic in style, this is lightly spiced, showing impressive depth toward the finish. This estate has enjoyed a good run of form in recent years and this 2020 continues that trend. If you love the style of Batailley, you will love this." 93-95 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
"Dark fruit with cassis notes and a graphite edge. Fine attack, juicy and refreshing but backed by a firmness of structure behind. Solid, subdued and distinctly Pauillac. Still relative value. (JL)" 17 pts, Jancis Robinson
