Domaine Louis Remy (Chantal Remy since 2009) is the current iteration of ancient family holdings in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Originally all held under the name Charles Remy, the vineyards of Philippe Remy were sold to DRC’s co-owner Lalou Bize-Leroy in 1988 to form the heart of the new Domaine Leroy. Domaine Louis Remy meanwhile was a 4.5ha domaine based in Morey St Denis and when Louis passed away in 1982, it was run until 1988 by his wife Marie-Louise, Chantal’s mother. Chantal (Remy-Rosier) then ran it as regisseur from 1988 to 2008 when her mother died, and her two brothers sold their 2/3s of the family holdings to other domaines. Chantal’s remaining third, now just 1.5ha, but with all the Grands Crus, including 32a of Chambertin (and nearly double that of Latricières), became Domaine Chantal Remy from 2009. Her son Florian totally took over the work in 2013. The winemaking remains commendably old school: A horse is employed in the vineyards, which are farmed with no chemicals at all, rarely more than ten percent whole bunch is added, and only a third new oak is used in the extended ageing process, before bottling without fining or filtration. The resultant wines are neither fleshy nor flashy, instead showing a nobility, poise and delicacy which is all too rare today.

The Domaine’s Chambertin Grand Cru vines are 90 years old and in a prime spot in this most vaunted of vineyards, bordered by the rows owned by Trapet and Leroy.
