Domaine Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru 'Clos des Épeneaux'
- Burgundy, France
The appellation’s grandest domaine, Comte Armand has been overseen by winemaker Paul Zinetti since 2014. Although it takes many years to reach its full potential, it’s worth the wait as with maturity Epeneux is like a universe in a glass, exploding exponentially in all directions at once. It has great intensity and a weight of rich fruit and impressively structured tannins but like great Barolo, it shows lively floral, elegance and purity too. As long-lived as many of the Côtes de Nuits’ most renowned wines, it has long been contended that if ever one Côte de Beaune wine deserves elevation to Grand Cru, this is it. In 2018 the domaine has unquestionably crafted a legend and we were also really impressed with the Auxey Duresses 1er Cru this year so are offering as well.
As always the five constituent parts are tried separately, notes for each below: parcel 2 – 35% of the blend: From younger vines but still 36 years old, this is good juice, with lively sous bois and strawberry character, notes of smoke and salted meats, savoury acidity. parcel 1 – 10% of the blend: From 50 year old vines, in deeper soils, this has more structure bordering more abundant, softer sweet red fruits, a spine of bracing acidity and juicy polished tannins parcel 3 – 16% of the blend: From vines which are over 70 years olds, planted on thinner limestone soils back at the top of the clos, this shows darker earthier forest fruits, palate is taut, chiselled, with good presence on the mid to late palate and a saline grip on the finish parcel 4 – 29% of the blend: Pastille and linctus, anise and pepper, Cote Rotie-ish, very savoury, peppery. Press wine (10%) – a little jammier, less complex, and more blocky but still decentOverall blend is very successful – complete and cohesive but will age for 50+ years. Tom, Wine Guru
The 2018 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was tasted from the four component blends and an assemblage. I must say that although I would like to have reported about the obvious difference between parcels of various vine age and soil types, I would describe them more as variations on a theme, the differences more nuanced than I have found in other vintages. The final pre-prepared blend has a delineated bouquet of blackberry, raspberry and cranberry scents, more floral than expected, with pressed rose petals and orange blossom emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and the 30% new oak extremely well integrated, with savory hints toward the persistent finish. This is just superb. 93-95/100, Neal Martin, Vinous
One of the best Côte de Beaune reds of the vintage. The four blocks that make up the blend of this justly celebrated Pommard Premier Cru red amount to 5.23ha and range in age between 36 and 100 years' old. Aged in one third new wood, it has spice and tobacco pouch top notes, layers of red berry fruit, fresh acidity and firm, yet granular tannins. 96/100, Tim Atkin MW
