Our visits to de Montille get (thankfully) longer each year as we continue to deepen our relationship with Etienne, Brian and the team. I can’t think of another address in Burgundy that has such strength in its domaine whites and Cote de Beaune reds (and the highly sought after Vosne Romanée ‘Malconsorts’ cherry on top) so we are delighted to carry a good selection from across their portfolio.

Brian is rightly pleased with the domaine’s wines again this year commenting on a good balance of acidity and alcohol but adding a note of caution about climate change: 2019 was one of the driest vintages on record and he suggests Burgundy is in “in a window right now. Pinot Noir is a delicate variety and we need more water and less sun”. Overall he preferred slightly fewer whole bunches and less new oak than 2018. Etienne adds that 2019 has a “classic textural character” and was “a consensual vintage – everyone could make the style of wine they wanted, unlike the last three vintages, here there is something for everyone”. The latter is certainly true here at de Montille with chiselled, polished reds and racy but juicy whites. Once again Beaune 1er Cru (both colours) continues to over perform and offer exceptional value.

"Taillepieds is a class apart in Volnay - the Queen of Cote des Beaune reds, and a regular contender for elevation to Grand Cru. Gravel on limestone soils give a bracing salinity to the wines which help season the rolling waves of intense and varied aromas and flavours of a vineyard that includes vines over eighty years old. 2019 saw Brian use 100% whole bunches and 30% new oak. That gorgeous red cherry nose and a richer strawberry jam tart note, but loads of freshness, dried flowers and crushed stone dust. Palate has sculpted salty tannins that help deliver the red fruits, rocks and liquid smoke in waves of flavour to a satisfying sustained end. As ever plenty of structure, tension and depth." Tom Harrow, Wine Guru

"100% whole cluster. Pretty mid purple. Ravishing nose in its whole bunch style, and like all the wines, there is no hint of herbaceousness. A little firmer at the finish, quality fruit, well concentrated and with the right structure. Some white pepper in support of the deep dense fruit. Tasted: October 2020"
92-94 pts, Jasper Morris MW

"The 2019 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru was showing a little more oak on the nose compared to the Champans. The 100% whole cluster lends some black pepper and clove notes to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good density and grip and a bold but balanced, slightly earthy, spicy finish. Good potential but it will need time." 92-94 pts, Neal Martin, Vinous
