Domaine des Lambrays Morey St Denis
- Burgundy, France
It’s all change again at the domaine, with Jacques Devauges crossing the road from Clos de Tart to take the helm, after Boris Champy’s brief tenure, following Thierry Brouin’s 38 years as winemaker. Does billionaire owner Bernard Arnault have another acquisition in the region pending? The rumour mill was certainly hard at work at time of writing… Meanwhile in the cellar, Jacques reminded us that 2018 was the warmest year on record with early flowering at the end of May and harvest completed at the domaine by 3rd September, thus avoiding the problems of stuck fermentation that especially affected those who picked much later. A great set of reds from the domaine, the Clos 2018 is definitely a legend.
From two plots, both 0.8ha, one on top of Lambrays, one on top of Tart, both very rocky, calcareous soils, virtually free from topsoil. Only 6000 bots made. More extravagant fruit than 2015 and most powerful since 2003. Aromas of bright red cherries and spicy, glossy black forest fruits, dried flowers too. Palate has an impressive spine of acidity and very focussed, lean tannins, which bounce the fruit around impressively and leave an extended chalky finish. Tom, Wine Guru
The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village comes from two parcels at the top of Clos des Lambrays where the soil is very shallow, and is completely de-stemmed. It has a bright bouquet of black cherries and blueberry fruit, simple but full of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy ripe tannins and moderate acidity, and lightly spiced with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Enjoy this over the next 6–8 years. 89-91/100, Neal Martin, Vinous
92/100, Tim Atkin MW
