Pierre was one of first appointments in November and set the bar high as always. The global demand for his Grands Crus means allocations are keenly fought over but the quality and value across the range is always exciting and we are pleased to have a good supply of Pierre’s various expressions of Gevrey Chambertin. In 2018 all the wines were picked in the first week of September and ABV is between 12.5-13.5%. New oak is kept to a minimum and there is 20% whole bunch for the 1er crus and up. The wines were bottled without fining or filtering in November. Pierre suggests the wines have the fruit of 2015 but with riper, silkier tannins and greater elegance, due to the water reserves from the heavy winter and spring rains. It was certainly a super set – from Bourgogne to Beze, and finishing our tasting with a 1969 Lavaut Saint Jacques (blind) shows that for all their deftness and elegance, Duroché’s wines are built to last.

97/100, Tim Atkin MW

Combining the definition of the Charmes with the richness of the Latricieres, if not the sweetness. This adds another layer, mostly stones. Palate is mouthfilling but has terrific energy, with a freshness and coolness to the finish which continues in waves. Tom, Wine Guru

0.25 ha (0.62 acre). Planted 1920 and still 50% are the original plants. 13,000 plants per ha and has to be worked by horse. Tank sample but about to be bottled. Lifted and peppery with a light herbal freshness to the dark fruit. Tight and mouth-wateringly fresh. Not particularly intense but very long. Chalky finesse and surprisingly juicy. A light touch with great persistence. Burgundy incarnate. 17+/20, Julia Harding MW

12 rows below and 8 above going up to the top, planted 1920. Four whole barrels this year! 13,000 plants per hectare for horse work and no space wasted. Rich imperial purple, with little bouquet at first request. Super-succulent, oak shows a little here, suave finish, Clos de Bèze keeps its majesty under wraps, a discreet queen of Chambertin. Beautifully poised…. 5 Star Wine! 97-99/100, Jasper Morris MW

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a profoundly complex bouquet that compels you to stop and contemplate the irresistible blend of red berry fruit, sous-bois, blood orange and crushed stone with fabulous delineation. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins and perfectly judged acidity. Quite Rousseau-like in style, with a classic, multidimensional, somehow "complete" finish. Outstanding. Just four barrels produced. 96-98/100, Neal Martin, Vinous

The 2018 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru opens in the glass with a deep and brooding bouquet of dark fruits, coniferous forest floor, baking chocolate, grilled meats and black truffles. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with an ample chassis of rich structuring tannins, succulent acids and fine concentration, concluding with a long, resonant finish. From a parcel planted in 1920, this is the source of the domaine's sélection massale. 94-96/100, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
