Domaine Duroché Latricieres-Chambertin Grand Cru
- Burgundy, France
Pierre was one of our first appointments in November and set the bar high as always. The global demand for his Grands Crus means allocations are keenly fought over but the quality and value across the range is always exciting and we are pleased to have a good supply of Pierre’s various expressions of Gevrey Chambertin. In 2018 all the wines were picked in the first week of September and ABV is between 12.5-13.5%. New oak is kept to a minimum and there is 20% whole bunch for the 1er crus and up. The wines were bottled without fining or filtering in November. Pierre suggests the wines have the fruit of 2015 but with riper, silkier tannins and greater elegance, due to the water reserves from the heavy winter and spring rains. It was certainly a super set – from Bourgogne to Beze, and finishing our tasting with a 1969 Lavaut Saint Jacques (blind) shows that for all their deftness and elegance, Duroché’s wines are built to last.
From 0.25ha parcel, this is more burnished, deeper than Charmes, with a sweeter, more seductive nose. Palate is gloriously generous and succulent but again keeps focus, with vibrant plums and cherries, juicy tannins and herb salt at the end. This has a great sense of place and purpose. Tom, Wine Guru
The 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru has a much more complex and engaging bouquet compared to the Charmes-Chambertin, a smorgasbord of ebullient red berry fruit laced with minerals and wilted rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a brisk line of acidity. Fresh and vibrant with gentle grip toward the finish. This is an outstanding 2018 from Pierre Duroché that will give 20 to 30 years of drinking pleasure. Superb. 95-97/100, Neal Martin, Vinous
Tank sample but about to be bottled. Dark cherry red. An inviting combination of ripeness and mineral/stoniness. Crushed rocks over black fruit. Elegant not showy. Tight, dry and dancing on the palate – even in youth. Juicy and surprisingly approachable. Dry, paper-fine tannins. Not a powerhouse though all in balance. 17/20, Julia Harding MW
Pierre Duroché eschewed the use of new wood on his Grands Crus in 2018, allowing the fruit of the vintage to express itself. Sourced from a 0.25ha parcel right next to Chambertin itself, this is a classically chalky, focused, pithy, refreshing style showing juicy wild strawberry and red cherry fruit, subtle whole bunch spice and a long, mouthwatering finish. One of a series of very impressive wines from this talented young vigneron. 96/100, Tim Atkin MW
Almost black centre, with a little purple edge. Again we can perceive a little touch of whole bunch vinification. Massive weight to this and very Latricières in its plumply sumptuous style. Balanced as ever, and long as ever. Dark raspberry through blackcurrant for the fruit register. 5 Star Wine! 95-98/100, Jasper Morris MW
One of the highlights of this year's range chez Duroché is the superb 2018 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautifully defined wine that unfurls in the glass with aromas of ripe cherries, cassis and wild berries that mingle with suggestions of coniferous forest floor, violets and orange rind. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and incisive, with a deep and fleshy core of fruit, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. 94-96/100, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
