Domaine Henri Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Lavaux Saint-Jacques'
- Burgundy, France
Charles Magnien is one of the most exciting of the next generation growers in the Cote de Nuits, having taken over from his father in 2009 and rung in considerable changes, which now really make the most of the family’s enviable 6 hectares of vineyards. The Domaine was recommended by Charles’ friend Pierre Duroché, partly to divert our insatiable demand for his own 1er and Grand Cru wines from Gevrey Chambertin, and there is definitely a fair comparison to be made: Charles’ wines have a similar energy, purity and focus, as well as showing intensity rather than density, and both have commendably restrained levels of alcohol and new oak, although perhaps Magnien shows a touch more generous tannins. This is definitely a domaine to watch – as noted by Neal Martin first at BurgFest 2015. The Wine Advocate’s William Kelley notes “this is an exciting emerging domaine with which consumers are warmly advised to acquaint themselves”.
The Magniens have 11 rows of 70 year old vines. Black purple in colour, the nose shows a medium ripeness yet with dark fruit. Slightly less ripe tannins on the palate but very well integrated. This wine is not so voluptuous but very fine. It has the best acidity of the range, by analysis.
91-94/100, Jasper Morris MW
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru comes from 70-year-old vines located in eleven 100-meter-long rows, or 0.26 hectares. This was showing a touch more reduction than the Les Cazetiers, rendering the nose more difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple, quite fine tannins, mainly black fruit and touches of licorice and white pepper. There is impressive density on the finish, though I find that the Les Cazetiers displays a little more breeding at this stage. 90-92/100, Neal Martin, Vinous
