Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis 1er Cru 'les Vaillons'
A combination of linden blossom and almond give way to a long, rounded finish.
Flinty and precise on the palate with baked apple, soft acid, quite full body and a touch of dried hay on the finish. Lovely intensity and length here, going beyond even the normal premier cru boundaries.
17.5/20 Richard Hemming MW for jancisrobinson.com
A 4.3ha vineyard on the village’s south west border, with clay-limestone atop the famous Kimmeridgian clay (named after the town of Kimmeridge in Dorset – that has yet to show off truly world class whites!). This sees 10% oak which bumps up the herbal, lactic notes that sit alongside the green apple and citrus nose. Succulent, juicy with impressive tension right to the finish.
Always a super reliable, benchmark domaine, and well-priced, Clos Frantin’s 2017s continue a good run of form. We were also really impressed by a number of the Maison’s wines this year which have closed the gap with its flagship domaine whilst offering tremendous value. As Neal martin comments, Bichot can make “really quite delicious, complex wines that often surprise people in blind tastings when not swayed by the label.” We feel our selections, from village wines to the most senior Grand Crus, all show the precision, typicity and expressive, vibrant, phenolically mature fruit that make a case or two essential purchases for all Burgundy lovers.
