Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Grand Cru 'les Vaudésirs'
Within the house of Albert Bichot, Domaine Long-Depaquit is well known for its careful selection of Chablis styles and we have chosen our favourites of the vintage.
Chateau Long-Depaquit sits at the centre of the village of Chablis, surrounded by a rose garden. The approach is to limit grape yields in the vineyard, intervention and oak in the winery to develop wines with purity and focus on expression of the individual plots. The winery was modernised in 2014, leading to reduced environmental impact and a step up in quality.
The 2019 vintage started with early Spring warmth, which left the vines susceptible to late frosts and a rainy May, which affected yields (20-40% of the grapes were lost) but not quality. A long, dry and warm summer left the remaining crop in perfect condition and allowed a near perfect balance of ripeness, concentration and acidity. Overall, a wonderful year for production of a modern style of Chablis, with a touch more ripeness to counterbalance its trademark stoniness.
"I approach any tasting of Chablis with trepidation, even when the subject matter is the illustrious range of Domaine Long-Depaquit, which is part of the family-owned Domaines Albert Bichot. Whilst I’ll be hard to shift from my belief that Chardonnay finds its most sensuous expression in southern Burgundy, these fine examples represent the head to the Côte d’Or’s heart."
"The vines planted in the Vaudésirs valley at the heart of the Grand Cru sector of Chablis are over 40 years old, on a steep south-facing slope which catches the sun, allowing the grapes to ripen optimally. Brighton beach memories here with bags of oyster shells and a bracing salinity, beyond which lies some grapefruit peel and nutmeg. The taste is similarly complex and gratifying, with a precise continuation of the nose leading to a near endless finish. Wonderful." Nathan Hill
"Much fuller yellow, while the bouquet has started to take on the spiciness of full ripeness, with maybe a hint of honeysuckle. This is a powerful beast, if you are a power-hound add a point or two my score. What keeps the balance is the finely judged acidity. Tasted: October 2020" 92 pts, Jasper Morris, MW
"(from a holding of 2.6 ha; ~25% new wood) Noticeable but not really intrusive wood sets off mildly exotic white and yellow peach, sea breeze and iodine whiffs. There is both fine volume and mid-palate density to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that flash a touch of youthful austerity on the sappy and lingering finish. 2026+" 91-93 pts, Burghound
