Another richly satisfying range of wines from Romain, who continues to craft wines of structure, clear vineyard expression and complexity from an exciting array of vineyards. The wines are high class examples of their appellations but still offer good value. Romain told us that despite the stress on the vines due to nearly four weeks of temperatures above 35 degrees, there were (just) sufficient bursts of rain to ensure balanced ripening. This led to a good number of small, healthy, concentrated berries, with harvest beginning on 4th September and concluding ten days later. This early picking has ensured wines with plenty of flesh but also freshness, as the decrease in acidity from the must to finished wine was limited, so they are balanced with pH at 3.5 – 3.65, and alcohols at 13.2-13.8. Romain describes the vintage as “gourmandise”, but not as much as 2015, as has more freshness. The wines are juicy and fruitful with sophisticated structure and good ageing potential. New oak is at 40% maximum for grand crus, 25-30% for premier crus, and 20% for village wines.

“The Baby Beze” – running along its western border, so just above thus it keeps freshness in hotter vintages. From forty five year old vines. Dark, brambly, red cherries, with black tea notes, brooding and tightly wound. Flavours are a little more open, anise-edged raspberries and cherries, some mocha and soy, bounded by rich and densely packed tannins drawing the wine along the palate. This has huge potential. Lovely sweetness, purity and vibrancy, no flabbiness. A powerhouse. Tom, Wine Guru

This cool site in the forest was a bonus in 2018 and certainly explains the fresher nose, and the lively purple. Great nose here, hovers between red and black fruit, raspberries perhaps to the fore, ripe red cherry too, but more complex than a single fruit. Attractive saline touch at the finish. Very stylish. 91-94/100, Jasper Morris MW

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel Air 1er Cru offers red currant, crushed strawberry and cranberry scents on the nose, plus a creaminess that develops with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous, leading to a sweet, orange sorbet and marmalade-infused finish. This is a well-made wine but not imbued with the great longevity of other crus from the domaine. 90-92/100, Neal Martin, Vinous

Located on the slope above the Clos de Bèze, Bel Air is something of a guarded secret among Burgundy lovers, both as Premier Cru and village wine, but I'm more than happy to share my enthusiasm. This is a typically elegant expression of the terroir from Romain Taupenot: ethereal, refined and hauntingly perfumed with perfectly integrated 33% new wood. 94/100, Tim Atkin MW
