Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

One of the top five domaines in Burgundy, Dugat-Py also has one of the most impressive and extensive cellars in the region, originally built in 11th century for the Abbey of Saint Benigné in Dijon. Loïc Dugat, now 13th generation, is continuing the family tradition of making some of the greatest and most sought-after wines in Burgundy, from the family’s eleven hectares of perfectly sited vineyards, planted with vines averaging nearly seventy years old. Everything is done by hand, while a horse is used to plough a few of the vineyards. The domaine has been fully organic since 2003, with Loïc now working biodynamically across a number of sites. The wines are vinified with as little intervention as possible and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2018 the use of new oak has been reduced which really allows the richness and depth of the fruit to shine through. Our tasting here in November was an undisputed highlight, the range from Bourgogne Rouge to Grands Crus uniquely thrilling.
From five parcels of vines that are between 40 and 90 years old, which are right next to Chambertin itself, this is arguably the finest Charmes terroirs. Harvest started on the afternoon of 29th August as is a sun-baked site. Seductive, full pouting nose, plush, very deep red and black fruit, round and supple, with coffee bean and red earth, black truffles, stones and forest floor. Spicy concentrated black plums, intense, muscular and focussed, with rich, sexy tannins. This has lovely energy and great sense of completion, round, refined and long, the finish continues in waves. One third comes from Mazoyères-Chambertin, the rest from Charmes itself. Picked on the afternoon of 29th August. 9 barrels made, 6 new and 3 one year old. Imperial purple throughout with a rumbustious nose. A wealth of deep strawberry fruit backed by a little black cherry, then quite high acidity which is no bad thing in 2018. 93-96/100, Jasper Morris MW
The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru bursts from the glass with a characteristically exuberant bouquet of cherries and licorice, complemented by hints of peonies and warm spices. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and vibrant, its powdery structuring tannins concealed in an ample core of strikingly succulent, lively fruit. This Charmes-Chambertin's evident freshness is a vindication of Loïc Dugat-Py's decision to harvest early—and, just as importantly, his punctilious viticulture. Vinified with 60% whole cluster, this is another cuvée that saw entirely new barrels in previous vintages but was matured in only 66% new oak this year. 94-96/100, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from five parcels, including one-third from Mazoyères-Chambertin that shares the same soil type. This contains 60% whole bunch and was raised in two-thirds new oak. It has a well-defined, slightly tertiary bouquet that takes time to fire its pistons. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition and freshness, thanks to Loïc Dugat’s decision to pick early, on August 29, though it still feels compact on the finish - closing down for the winter, perhaps. Standard Delivery takes 2-3 working days and costs £7.50 for orders under £75. Orders over £75 are subject to FREE Standard Delivery. Standard and Express Delivery is available for most mainland UK postcodes as listed in our T&Cs. Express Delivery costs £12.50. Express delivery orders over £75 are £5.
For Express Delivery (next working day) orders need to be placed before 1pm. Orders placed after 1pm will be received after two business days. Orders placed for next day delivery after 1pm on a Friday and before 1pm on a Monday will be delivered on Tuesday. Orders placed on a Bank Holiday will be similarly processed the day after the Bank Holiday and delivered the following day.
Same Day Delivery costs £20. This option is available to most London postcodes as listed in our T&Cs, if ordered by 1pm Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). If ordered after 1pm, you will receive your order on the next working day. We may be able to organise a speedy courier for you, so please call or email us if you have special requests. Our Club Offers may take longer to ship, as we collect all of our members’ orders together before ordering them from the winemaker.
