Edouard Delaunay Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru
Laurent set about to catapult these wines into the stratosphere and after sweeping up at the IWC 2020 awards for their incredible 2019s, one could argue, they may have reached space itself! They were in fact the biggest winner at the awards, picking up 8 trophies, Red Winemaker of the Year (for the wonderful Christophe Briotet), as well as 15 gold, 30 silver and 7 bronze medals. Safe to say, club members lapped up last year’s allocations and the staff too have been enjoying Laurent’s wines throughout the year. It is with great pleasure therefore that I can offer these brilliant wines. Best vintage yet? We certainly wouldn’t bet against it…
Every cuvée is treated individually, without a set formula for quantity of new oak, or amount of whole bunches used, which allows each wine to offer a true and deeply satisfying expression of the individual terroirs and vintage. What we have is absolutely everything we love about Burgundy. A real sense of place.
"From a plot that is half planted to pinot, and half to chardonnay, on the border between Pernand Vergellesses and Aloxe Corton. The vines face south so get very ripe but are high enough up on the hill that it keeps fresh. Unfortunately there was no production in 2021 so best stock up now!Buttered pineapple slices, bread dough, and quince paste form the first wave of aromas but then white blossoms, dried papaya and fresher orchard fruits push through. There is the same density and unctuousness on the palate but also plenty of brisk acidity as is on the Pernand Vergelesses side and very high up, nearly by the forest. The palate is actually livelier than the 2019 and it needs to be to balance the weight of rich, mouth-filling flavour that spills over the tongue. " Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
"En Charlemagne. Mid lemon colour. The nose is subdued behind the recent bottling. Then more succulent notes emerge and a dusting of coconut. No stones as yet. Really fine intensity here though, and a mineral thread. Not the most massive , but it is refined and persistent." Tasted: December 2021 95, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy
