Edouard Delaunay Meursault
Founded in 1893, the house of Delaunay became a prestigious and prolific estate and was one of the sole distributors of DRC and exclusively of La Romanée until the 1940s. Sold to Jean Claude Boisset in the 1990s, the maison was reborn in 2017 when winemaker and fifth generation, Laurent Delaunay, purchased back the name, and winery and cellars next to the family home Chateau de Chaumont. Laurent and wife Catherine have accessed some excellent vineyard sites across the Cote d’Or, including a gem in Petit-Vougeots, and right up to Griottes-Chambertin.Precise balance. Dear to the Delaunays due to family ties, Meursault stands as a universal reference for Burgundy’s great Chardonnays. However, due to its varied terroirs and the growers’ different approaches, the style of Meursault wines differs significantly from one cuvée to another. A blend of grapes from several plots, Edouard Delaunay’s Meursault represents their own interpretation of the appellation: precise balance between opulence and maturity on the one hand, and freshness and elegance on the other. Gorgeous straw yellow in colour. The first nose is redolent of honey and sourdough, a touch of hazelnut and vanilla sugar, opening up to fresh, airy scents of lemon verbena, fresh coriander and fresh herbs. Citrus nuances such as lemon and mandarin then surface, along with a delicate hint of vineyard peach. This is a rich, intense wine whose flavours will require a little time to reveal themselves. Very round start to the palate that is opulent but boasts pleasing, rather lively acidity. The flavours are reminiscent of vanilla and cane sugar. The finish features a delightful hint of citrus and a touch of salinity. This wine stands out for its balance between acidity and sucrosity that complement each other very well. Shows remarkable ageing potential.
