"Concentrated yet graceful, showing impressive energy and power on a long, gently tannic finish"
  •   South Australia, Australia
  •   Hearty Red
  •   Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz
  •   2015
The Barossa hills village of Keyneton, pioneered by pastoralist Joseph Keynes in 1842, was a musical and cultural focus for the early settlers, and was home to the Henschke Family Brass Band and the Henschke winery. The Henschke Family Band was founded in 1888 by Paul Gotthard Henschke and later led by third-generation Paul Alfred Henschke, and featured wonderful wind instruments such as a B flat euphonium, cornet and E flat clarinet. The B flat euphonium, a large brass wind instrument, was made by the famous Zimmermann factory in Leipzig, Germany, in the late 19th century. The instruments were imported by musical entrepreneur, Carl Engel of Adelaide in the late 1900s and have been lovingly restored and remain in the Henschke family.

The Henschke estate practises biodynamic farming; "I would like to see the next generation inherit a fertile and sustainable land. Using the principles of biodynamics and organics enables me to create the best environment for plant growth."

"Rich plum and plum-cake aromas with redder tones, too. Some dried-herb undertones. A ripe and rich style with plush and very rich, enveloping tannins that carry a very supple array of blackberries and plums. A blend of 66% shiraz, 19% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Drink or hold. Screw cap." 93 pts, James Suckling

"Transparent dark ruby. Delightfully mellow, sun-baked and ripe but with freshness on the finish. Pure South Australia on the palate: warm and leathery but with a gentle texture. The opposite of the Penfolds concentrated style – sort of a Moueix to a Pavie. More nuanced and less showy. I'm not sure why decanting is recommended as it seems to be mellow already. Because blends are less fashionable perhaps, this seems a bargain relative to Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone Shiraz and even relative to Cyril Henschke Cabernet. 17 pts, Jancis Robinson
