Jane Eyre Corton Grand Cru
Last year we visited Jane in her former shared premises in Bligny, but 2021 has rung in the changes. As well as being awarded a second star by La Revue du Vin de France (a sort of Michelin equivalent for winemakers) and then winning their coveted ‘winemaker of the year’ (first woman and first foreigner to do so), Jane has now moved operations to new premises across and along from Volnay in Cissey. This should give her enough space to expand production and also host the growing number of admirers of her wines. We have a slightly more limited range to offer you from 2020 as several of her contracts were not renewed this year (including the Chassagne Montrachet and Santenay 1er Cru) and overall yields were down. However what is lacking in quantity is more than made up for in quality. Jane began the harvest on 27th August, later than some, but there is no lack of freshness or tension in the wines. They are certainly rich and definitely age-worthy, but still show her trademark supple tannins, perfumed fruit and approachability.
This year an equal tri-partite blend of Maréchaudes from a plot towards the bottom of hill, giving pensive structure and brooding density, biodynamically farmed Bressandes, higher up the hill, which is more aromatic and forward, then Perrieres which is vinified separately and has the greatest mineral depths and gives more mid-palate fullness. Assembled from different plots vintage to vintage, and with no whole bunches in 2017 to 40% in 2018 to 50% in 2020, and with alcohol level varying from 12.5% to 14%, Jane’s top wine can be quite mercurial, a moveable feast, but is never less than thrilling.
This year I really loved the aromas of very ripe strawberries and baking spices, backed by oriental hoi sin sweetness and sandalwood. Sweet and juicy creamed fruits follow with an undercurrent of vibrant brambly acidity and waves of spicy tannin that lap over the tongue, giving impressive grip and an energetic pulse to the sweet but salty finish.
"The final wine is a blend between a mix of Bressandes and Maréchaudes vinified together with 60% whole bunches, and a destemmed barrel of more structured Perrières. Rich deep imperial purple, a wealth of fruit, very nicely balanced, the crunchy whole bunch notes turn up at the back inside a ripe summer pudding array of black and red fruit. Lovely weight of fruit on the mid palate."Tasted: October 2021 92-94, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy
