Domaine Jean Tardy Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Bas de Combe'
- Burgundy, France
Blink and you’d literally miss Domaine Jean Tardy, an envelope-sized sign by a driveway off the RN74 just outside Vosne Romanée. This would be a tremendous shame as the wines here are just getting better and better. Guillaume does a particularly impressive line in vieilles vignes lieu dits (old vine, single vineyards), which allow him to “avoid making a bad marriage between the wrong parcels”. The results are always seductive and supple and compete with premier crus for quality and complexity.
Sensuous and yet focussed as ever, In 2018 the wines have an additional gravitas (not weight). Picking early (harvest started 5th September) preserved freshness and ensured alcohol was less than 13.5% and pH levels are 3.4 - 3.6, whilst working a lot with the grape skin tannins in preference to whole bunch fermentation encouraged good extraction and plenty of matier. New oak is never above 50%. The vintage is definitely a keeper, and when we tasted, the wines had yet to be racked so tannins were a touch tight but these will soften with time. Guillaume suggests his 2018s show similar perfumes and textures to 2015 but with richer tannins and greater definition. Sleek and muscular, the acidity is fine and, whilst ample and viscous, the wines have impressive freshness and mineral depths. Fans of Domaine Tardy are in for a treat, and for anyone yet to jump on the bandwagon – 2018 is definitely the vintage to hop on board!
Tucked in the north east corner of the appellation, bordered by premier cru “Aux Baudots” to the west, and the premier cru Vosne vineyards of Les Chaumes to the north and Reas to the east, this 80-year old vineyard is guaranteed to excite Burgundy geeks: The combination of very old vines and millanderage, an exceptional yet under the radar site, and decent price makes it a worthy addition to all cellars. Deep purple colour, dark, savoury, initially discrete nose that becomes more expansive but retains an intellectual reserve. Good acids and long, stony tannins push the wild cherry led fruit and herbs through to the back palate, ensuring excellent minerality and length. Tom, Wine Guru
Planted 1938. Dense purple not quite so black as some others and the nose is a little fresher. This works nicely, the plums are not over the top and the structure can carry the richness very well. Excellent finish, plump, robust, with tannins by all means, but well balanced. 90-93/100, Jasper Morris MW
