Mark Haisma continues to impress with his dedication and commitment to sourcing and nurturing excellent parcels of vines from the growers he works with.

An Antipodean ex-pat, formerly winemaker at Yarra Yering – Mark is a rare example of an outsider managing to work his way into Burgundy’s notoriously closed circle, but who has been accepted by dint of diligence and tenacity. A number of growers now trust him sufficiently to give him just enough fruit – or rather, the opportunity to choose and work personally on specific micro-parcels of their vines, from pruning through to harvest.

Wild, sweet but crunchy cherries, slightly reductive nose, lots of whole bunch here, the palate is energetic and rich, with broad, earthy tannins bordering a sackful of stones and spicy red plums, a rollicking mouthful. Tom, Wine Guru

The 2018 Morey Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has a floral bouquet with wild roses and a touch of iris filtering through the red berry fruit. It gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, the 60–70% whole bunch lending a welcome pepperiness. This is finely structured with freshness from start to sapid finish. Give it a couple of years and it will drink well for more than a decade. 91-93/100, Neal Martin, Vinous

Tim Atkin: 93/100
