Mas de Daumas Gassac Blanc
Famous for its Grands Vins, the Mas de Daumas Gassac has been a family owned vineyard for more than 40 years and belongs to the Guibert family. It is set in a wild and enchanting valley, close the magnificent romanesque abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. 50 hectares of a deep, well drained soil, free from any chemical fertilisers.
It is this fabulous terroir, similar to the best parts of Burgundy, that Henri Enjalbert, the great Professor of Geology at Bordeaux university, rediscovered in the 1970’s.The winter was mild from January to March, and so the first buds arrived fairly early. The spring brought clement weather. Overall, the spring was cool, which slowed the progression of flowering, so that the vines were two weeks later than in 2018. The summer – flowering took place from late May to early June. One of the latest for the last ten years. During July and August, day-time temperatures were high, while the nights were fairly cool. This enabled them to harvest healthy, high-quality grapes!
"32% Viognier, 19% Petit Manseng, 18% Chardonnay, 14% Chenin, 17% Bourboulenc, Petit Courbu, Muscat Ottonel, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Muscat d’Alexandrie, Gros Manseng, Sémillon (France). Neheleschol (Israel), Amigne (Switzerland), Sercial de Madère (Portugal), Khondorni, Tchilar (Armenia), Albariño (Spain), Falanghina, Fiano, Grechetto (Italy). Heavy bottle. These guys are a bit insane. Look at those grape varieties. Tangy nose, like yogurt stirred through with raw dark honey. Very, very floral on the palate – so much so that you almost don’t notice the weight and complexity, the focus and drive. A coiled spring of acidity through fruit that shimmers through the spectrum from English orchard to tropical and back again. Morello cherries, grapefruit, mango, green apples, greengage, white peach. And then, just as you get distracted by all the mouth-watering fruit, the spice starts to filter through, from back to front: white pepper, black pepper, clove, fennel seed. It builds and builds. Like a Mozart symphony, an edge of anger under the beauty. Clenched, taut, hard bones under the riffs and ripples of pretty fruit. This needs way more time to really be what it is. "The 2019 Blanc offers a compelling interplay of stony orchard fruit with more exotic tropical inflections that develop in the glass. Silky, aromatic and exceptionally beautiful, this polished white has so much to offer. The Viognier is quite evident in the wine's aromatic profile and textural feel, but the blend with Petit Manseng, Chardonnay, Chenin and other varieties works so well here.)" 93 pts, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
