Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge
Famous for its Grands Vins, the Mas de Daumas Gassac has been a family owned vineyard for more than 40 years and belongs to the Guibert family. It is set in a wild and enchanting valley, close the magnificent romanesque abbey of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert. 50 hectares of a deep, well drained soil, free from any chemical fertilisers.
It is this fabulous terroir, similar to the best parts of Burgundy, that Henri Enjalbert, the great Professor of Geology at Bordeaux university, rediscovered in the 1970’s.
2018 is one of those vintages that only comes around every 10 years. Its complex personality was marked by some of the most atypical weather conditions - with rainfalls between January and May equal to the whole of 2017, Daumas Gassac’s fifty-year-old vineyard was able to benefit from a magnificent dry, hot summer, and produce a perfectly ripe crop.
"The 2018 Rouge opens with a burst of sweet red and purplish fruit that is immediately alluring. Medium in body and silky, the 2018 impresses with its understated finesse and total class. The 2018 can be enjoyed today for its primary fruit, but I would prefer to cellar it for a few years to gain a bit more nuance. It is such a pretty and effusive wine. Bright acids and persistent tannins, both Gassac signatures, linger." 93 pts, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
"75% Cabernet Sauvignon plus 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Pinot Noir, 2% Malbec, and then 4% of mixed varieties brought back by the Guibert family from their travels including Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and Montepulciano from Italy, and native cuttings from Switzerland, Armenia, Portugal, Russia, Georgia, Galicia and Croatia, aged fifteen months in 1-7 year old oak barrels. Brick dust, camphor, black currant and plums, arboreal notes of an old forest, moss, ivy and damp leaves. On the palate the fruit is rich but soft, plush, a touch of old wood and varnish, and tobacco, rather old school in style, vinous equivalent of an old velvet smoking jacket" Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
