Mirafiore is one of the most historical estates in Italy. Based in Serralunga d’Alba, the estate and hunting lodge were owned by the son of the first king of Italy, with a long tradition of Barolo production. Now it’s been relaunched in the hands of a very old school wine maker Danilo Drocco, with access to the best vineyard sites from the Fontanafredda estate.

Lazzarito is one of the top cru vineyards in Barolo, a beautifully-situated south-western amphitheatre of vines – previously only released by Germano and Vietti, both consistently rated in the mid to high 90s from critics, but now Mirafiore is challenging hard with their bottling, overtaking the former and on the heels of the latter. For example their 2008 was a 94-point wine, out-scoring Vietti but for half the price and 2010, a fantastic, structured and powerful vintage for Barolo, is a clear notch up.
