Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz
Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’
- South Australia, Australia
Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz.
“This sits in the typical, just cabernet-dominant style (54%) and marries cassis, blueberries, leaves and cedary-dominant aromas with more substantial blackberries and dark cherries, as well as redder tones at the finish. The regional sourcing here is cleverly played and delivers a fleshy, soft and smooth wine in 2017. Long, vanilla-laced after-trail. Drink over the next fifteen years. A stallion in the cellar!” 94/100, James Suckling
“The 2017 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz is only 54-46 in favor of Cabernet Sauvignon, yet it shows pronounced mint and cassis aromas. The Shiraz is more apparent in the mouth, where it fills out the full-bodied palate with velvety richness and plush tannins before fading a bit quickly on the finish. This vintage includes fruit from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully.” 92/100, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
“Very dark. Intense, well-integrated nose. This really shows the two ingredients to advantage. Dark black fruits and then the aromatic top note of Cabernet. Real juice and power but not heat. Toasty and savoury.” 17.5/20, Jancis Robinson
