PerSe is a personal project from Edgardo (Edy) del Popolo and David Bonomi. The pair met in 1995, while working together at a local winery and are now considered trailblazers on the Argentine wine scene. David is one of the most knowledgeable oenologists in the Uco Valley, with on-the-ground experience from Altamira in the south to Gualtallary in the north. Edy was practically born under a grapevine: his parents owned vineyards in north Mendoza, he went on to study oenology and agronomy, and when the winery he was working at was sold to the Santa Rita Estates. Gualtallary is a high-altitude zone in the department of Tupungato in the Uco Valley. David and Edy work with small plots of just 0.2-0.5 hectares, situated at around 1,300 meters. Due to the altitude average day and nighttime temperatures are 3-6 degrees lower than in the city of Mendoza, they choose their sites carefully as only certain plots can produce grapes that reach the quality they are aiming for.

"The 2017 La Craie also changed sources in 2017, and it is now from a plot of their own vineyards in Gualtallary, from poorer soils that are very shallow. It was produced from a plot next to Iubileus, but the soils are whiter and shallower. Also, this is Malbec with Cabernet Franc, and in 2017 they used more Cabernet Franc than in any of the previous vintages; so, it can represent something around 40%, as in warmer years they like to use more Cabernet Franc. I feel an earthier personality here, darker and perhaps a little riper than Iubileus, with chalkier tannins and a little earthier. 880 bottles produced. I sampled the 2018, of which there should be some 1,500 bottles, and I found it really promising, again better than Iubileus... We'll see next year..." 97 pts, Luis Gutiérrez, WA

"A blend of mostly Malbec, with around 14% Cabernet Franc, grown at 1,450m in the Monasterio sub-region of Gualtallary in Uco Valley. Hand-picked and co-fermented in old French oak with wild yeasts, then aged for 16 months in the same barrels. Pretty aromatics, with violet top notes, sweet black cherry and black pepper spice. Silky black cherry attack; freshness persists through the palate, with firm acidity, elegant tannins, black and blue berry fruit, plus a red fruit lift from the Cab Franc. Characterised by freshness and minerality. Only 800 bottles made." 97 pts, Julie Sheppard, Decanter
