PerSe is a personal project from Edgardo (Edy) del Popolo and David Bonomi. The pair met in 1995, while working together at a local winery and are now considered trailblazers on the Argentine wine scene. David is one of the most knowledgeable oenologists in the Uco Valley, with on-the-ground experience from Altamira in the south to Gualtallary in the north. Edy was practically born under a grapevine: his parents owned vineyards in north Mendoza, he went on to study oenology and agronomy, and when the winery he was working at was sold to the Santa Rita Estates.Gualtallary is a high-altitude zone in the department of Tupungato in the Uco Valley. David and Edy work with small plots of just 0.2-0.5 hectares, situated at around 1,300 meters. Due to the altitude average day and nighttime temperatures are 3-6 degrees lower than in the city of Mendoza, they choose their sites carefully as only certain plots can produce grapes that reach the quality they are aiming for.
"The 2015 Iubileus wants to present Gualtallary through a Malbec, even though there is some Cabernet Franc co-fermented with it. It's expressive and floral, with something earthy, a mixture of red and black fruit and a gentler palate. This is from Gualtallary at 1,300 meters in altitude, from 11-year-old vines on alluvial soils where the boulders are covered with calcium carbonate. The Malbec fermented in rolling barrels and the Cabernet Franc in open-top barrels. It matured in used barriques for 16 months. It's nuanced and floral, harmonious and terribly balanced. It's powerful and concentrated but with acidity and freshness. 2015 shows the power of Malbec but only within the right context; if isolated, it would be really subtle, elegant and fragrant. This is simply superb. 1,020 bottles were filled unfiltered in September 2016." 96+ pts, Luis Gutiérrez, WA
"Malbec grown at 1,300m on chalky alluvial soils in Uco Valley's Gualtallary region. From a cold and wet vintage; grapes were hand-picked, then fermented and aged in neutral French oak. A tiny amount of Cabernet Franc (around 3%) contributes to the heady aromatics: expressive floral and cherry top notes, with earthy base notes. Silky black and blue fruit attack leads to a fresh, lively palate with remarkable natural acidity and ripe, filigree tannins. Finesse and elegance; a wine that's in harmony and evolving slowly. Only 1,020 bottles made." 96 pts, Julie Sheppard, Decanter
