We were expecting great things of Philippe from 2018 vintage and he did not disappoint. The harvest began with his Moulin A Vent on 28th August (the “Latour of Beaujolais”) and finished two weeks after. Philippe says the sunny weather gave him “gourmandise” wines with density, like 1990 but with more structure. As usual the reds are vinified 100% whole bunch and with minimal interventions throughout the elevage. Muscular as always and viscous with the fleshy fruit of the vintage, they are nevertheless fresh and well defined with characteristic vitality. Cult status can be an overused description but is rightly-applied to the wines of Pacalet, which now have a fanatical global following.

Philippe has five rows that run from the edge of wall with Vosne Romanée which gives him the full palette of soil types in this largest Grand Cru, from the stones at the top to the marl at the top to the heavier clay nearer the bottom. This is a Clos Vougeot worthy of the best of them, the nose is wild and foresty but majestic too, abounds with minerals and small red berry fruit. The palate is really succulent, packed with red and darker fruits but great energy, leading to an unctuous, truffley finish. Dense but lively, I love the swirling shape of this in the mouth and the bold, sweet finish that continues in waves. Tom, Wine Guru

Sourced from the southern end, both uphill and down, across the three soil types. Philippe mentions the dark earth with marine fossils in the middle and light red soil at the top. Very dense purple with a suitably ungiving nose. Firm structure at the back. The tannins speak but this will work very well in the long term. 93-96, Jasper Morris MW
