"One of the great wines of Italy."

San Leonardo wines are more akin to Bordeaux than Bolgheri with their balance, concentration and purity. As leading Italian critic Nicolas Belfrage said, San Leonardo ‘can have an elegance-cum-depth capable of taking on the best clarets of the world.’

The estate is protected from the cold northern winds by the Trentino mountains and benefits from the warmth of Lake Garda at the bottom of the valley. Well-drained, low-fertility soils contribute to the unique terroir. Organically certified in 2018, San Leonardo is dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of its vineyards.

The Guerrieri Gonzaga family have been winemakers here since the 18th century. The current owner, Marchese Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga is a rare example of a professionally-trained aristocrat-oenologist who had a passion and determination to bring the San Leonardo wines to the next level. In the 1960s he spent time at the Tenuta San Guido (the producer of the famous Sassicaia) and even employed their same legendary consultant, Giacomo Tachis for a time.

San Leonardo’s outstanding Bordeaux blend has received ‘Tre Bicchiere’ from Gambero Rosso for an extraordinary fourteen consecutive vintages and was also numbered among the Guide’s ‘Fifty Wines which changed Italy’.

"The 2015 San Leonardo pours forth with a beautiful velvety appearance and sultry dark garnet color. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. San Leonardo is a wine made for long aging, but the nice thing about this vintage is that the bouquet remains quite accessible at this young age. Nevertheless, I'd still suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar so that it can calmly finish its evolution." 97+/100, Monica Larner, WA (Feb-2021)

"The 2015 San Leonardo is a classic in the making. The bouquet is wonderfully perfumed with peppery florals, mixing tart cherry and blueberry with white smoke, hints of graphite and shaved cedar. Silky textures race across a core of juicy acids and minerals, making for a ripe yet cool-toned and pleasurably tactile expression. Youthful tannins slowly make themselves known toward the close. Long, structured and spicy, the 2015 finishes with a crescendo of tart blue and black fruits, tapering off to notes of subtly sweet spice. As good as this is today, it will only get better over time. That said, it doesn’t appear that this is going to shut down anytime in the immediate future, so it’s certainly worth checking on a bottle or two before forgetting the rest in your cellar.95/100, Eric Guido

One of the great wines of Italy… Sassicaia and San Leonardo seem like brothers separated in childhood.” Wine Advocate (Dec-2014)

Surely the most successful Bordeaux blend of Northern Italy.” Jancis Robinson (Aug-2012)

"A more hedonistic, cherry and vanilla tobacco nose than usual, then dusky ripe plums, touch of star anise, baking spices, a faint green peppercorn note (Carmenere coming through?) all without moving the glass. Lead and sandalwood, red cherries and currants – the natural sophistication of SL is almost fighting the warmth of the vintage – it’s a battle for the soul of the wine. Palate is peppery, savoury, herbaceous and earthy with notes of black olive and rosemary but the fruit is currently more tucked in than the exuberant nose suggests, with a refreshing line of green acidity and straightness to the tannins that keeps the blackcurrants and red plums in line. Over time this will unfurl in to one of the greats…" Tom Harrow, Wine Guru
