An hour's drive east of Paris, Champagne produces the world's foremost luxury sparkling wine. No other sparkling wine can be called Champagne as the wine has protected designation of origin. About 40% of the vines in this region are Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay, then Pinot Meunier. Blanc de Noirs is the white grape juice from the two Pinots and Blanc de Blancs is from Chardonnay and perhaps a couple of very minor grape varieties. Champagnes without either of these labels will be a blend of any of the permitted grapes.
