"...in its early maturity, the wine shows the same lovely white floral notes as more recent vintages"

Weingut am Stein's Grosses Gewachs (GG) wines are from the Stettener Stein, which lies along the river Main approximately 20 km downstream from Würzburg. Stetten has a very long tradition in Viticulture and the Stettener Stein vineyard is one of the oldest in the Franconian wine region.

Hand harvesting, cool fermentation and a long maturing period on the fine yeast results in wines of fine complex fruit and a delicate acidity. The wines show a youthful freshness and vivacity with the ability to age. Vinification is in steel tanks, concrete eggs, amphora and a few wines see small French barriques.

"Winemaker Ludwig Knoll insists that his wines come to their peak about 8 years from the vintage. I’ve had little experience of this so far, as production is so tiny and the wines are sold out on release. I’m holding some back in my own cellar for longer term drinking, as the prices are incredibly attractive (try buying Grand Cru wines from France for under £40)! Ludwig has offered us a limited allocation of the 2013 vintage GG from his own wine library. I was astounded how, in its early maturity, the wine shows the same lovely white floral notes as more recent vintages, but with an added waxiness and texture both on the nose and palate. The attractive smokiness is still there, but everything is a shade richer and perfectly poised. It will be hard to resist drinking these now, but I’ll keep at least half back to see what happens when they reach the eight years Ludwig demands."
