- Barossa Valley, Australia
The RunRig has often drawn comparison with the beautiful fragrant and tautly structured wines produced form the steep slopes of the Northern Rhone Valley's appellation of Cote Rotie.
"As usual, the 2017 RunRig is approximately 2% Viognier. It spent almost 30 months in oak, 40% of which was new. Hints of peach or apricot appear on the nose, alongside notes of hickory smoke, cherries and baking spices. It’s full-bodied and concentrated but supple and silky enough to seem lighter in the mouth, showing tremendous length and elegance on the finish, where it adds nuances of cinnamon and cocoa." 98 pts, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate
"Deep, dark red/purple colour and a restrained, dark-fruited and faintly herbal bouquet. Black fruits and licorice. The wine is big and rich, fleshy and dense, with great concentration and extract yet also elegant structure. It’s deliciously fruit- sweet at the centre and then cleansing tannins dry the finish, which is very long. Superb ripeness. A very smart vintage of RunRig. (Spent 29 months in 30% new French barriques)." 96 pts, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
"The big factor here is the vintage. The 2017s from the top wines are from a slightly cooler, damper year - but remember this is Australia. The wines are graceful and charming, with lovely perfumes and earlier maturity. All Hermitage fruit from the pre-phylloxera era. Recalcitrant nose of black plum and blue fruit. Big raw tannins, very old vines 120-150 years. Lighter and creamier. 2% Viognier for creaminess" Nathan Hill
