This has real depth of flavour, richness, and plenty of oomph.

On a highland farm in Scotland the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a Steading. Here in the Barossa Valley the varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right, however in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid, earthy structure. It is sourced from Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz vines that survived the worldwide phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s, and a century later, the vine-pull scheme in the Barossa in the 1980s. The protection of this old vine resource of the Barossa Valley is central to the Torbreck story and this wine, more than any other, is an indication of what is possible from these historic cultivars.

"Deepish ruby-red colour with a purple tinge. The bouquet is fruit-driven with an array of cooked bloodplum, subtle spices, chocolate and vanilla aromas. The wine is fleshy and supple, rich and smoothlytextured. It's full in the mouth but not a biggie by any means. An elegant and stylish, well-balanced red that drinks superbly right now. (All matured in large foudres—no small oak)" 93 pts, Huon Hooke

"A blend of 53% grenache, 28% shiraz and 19% mataro. Each component has been elevaged in large-format oak (4,500 liters) and this is the wine that reflects the vintage style and quality. It shows the all-round consistency of 2018 with bright red and blue berries, some red pastry notes and deeper, earthy, slightly tarry notes, too. The palate has a rich, supple and fleshy texture with ripe red-plum and raspberry fruit flavors, as well as soft, latepicked tannins. Drink over the next eight years." 93 pts, James Suckling

"60/21/19% grenache/shiraz/mataro sourced from 40-150yo vines across 7 districts spanning the Barossa floor. Matured 20 months in French oak foudres. Beautifully crafted, polished, seamless Barossa GSM. Bright and deep in colour and personality. Blessed with the expansive, effortless character that comes from maturation in large oak foudre. All 3 varieties and oak unite in seamless coherence, guided by super-fine tannins through a long finish. Impossible to corner as fruity, savoury, herbal, peppery, spicy, fleshy or dry, it's consummately all of the above." 94 pts, Tyson Stelzer, Halliday

"The newest release, the 2019 The Steading, offers restrained aromatics of mixed berries and cherries interlaced with hints of savory herbs. If it lacks the ripeness and richness of the 2018, it's more elegant and perhaps more complex, with those herbal striations adding silky textural elements to the medium to full-bodied palate. Gentle tannins linger on the finish." 92 pts, Joe Czerwinski, WA
