Torbreck The Steading
"Very attractive with more structure than the Woodcutter’s blend, this has a very attractively sweet, white-flower edge as well as pie crust and honeysuckle. The palate is exceptionally structured and the viognier punches above its weight. The apricots and peaches are stunning." 94 pts, James Suckling
- Barossa Valley, Australia
On a highland farm in Scotland the collection of barns, stables and outbuildings is known as a Steading. Here in the Barossa Valley the varieties Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz all stand in their own right, however in blending, their strengths create a complex wine of solid, earthy structure. It is sourced from Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz vines that survived the worldwide phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s, and a century later, the vine-pull scheme in the Barossa in the 1980s. The protection of this old vine resource of the Barossa Valley is central to the Torbreck story and this wine, more than any other, is an indication of what is possible from these historic cultivars.
"Torbreck's 2018 The Steading Blanc is an estate-grown blend of 50% Roussanne, 30% Marsanne and 20% Viognier. The Roussanne is made and aged in stainless steel, the Marsanne goes into old oak and the Viognier goes into new oak (to tone down the aromatics and phenolics). The result is slightly floral on the nose but rich and creamy on the palate. It's full-bodied, offering up flavors of pear, melon and apricot, and backed by a silky, plush texture and terrific length." 93 pts, Joe Czerwinski, WA
