The Big One… Our 99-point 2010 Brunello finally released – the best young Brunello I have ever tried.
  •   Tuscany, Italy
  •   Hearty Red
  •   Sangiovese
  •   2010

Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plums and flowers. Licorice and mushroom it's full body, with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured yet shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal.
99/100

Back in December I got very excited after James Suckling, the world’s pre-eminent Tuscan critic, stole a march on his peers and published his review of the 2010 vintage calling it “the greatest modern vintage of Italy’s most famous red wine region.” Other critics and producers have been unanimous in their praise for the 2010s with Giacomo Neri calling it “the best vintage I have experienced in my winemaking career – and I started making wine in the early 1980s."

Vincenzo Abruzzese, Valdicava’s enigmatic and charming owner said of the vintage: “incredibly attractive when young but also structured and beautiful for aging. They will be the new standard in quality to judge all Brunello.” Since being blown away by Valdicava’s 2010s in barrel several times (and mentioning my enthusiasm in a How to Spend It - Divino Tuscany report) I have been pressing the estate for an allocation of their hugely over-subscribed wines and its paid off as I’m delighted to announce that Honest Grapes is the only official online UK retail channel for them. We are buying exclusively through our relationship with the estate – not via the Swiss grey market by way of Singapore with all the risks of fake bottles and multiple shipping destinations like anybody else who may try to offer you this wine. I’m not going to wax expansively about the wine’s merits and character suffice to say that as well impressive focus, extract and definition Valdicava’s 2010 is sleek, polished, with tremendous energy and almost hypnotically engaging – the best young Brunello I have ever tasted. Full stop. Over to you…
