Vegan wines are simply wines made with no animal products. During the winemaking process, sediment is often removed from the wine by filtration and fining agents, some of which are made from casein, a protein found in milk. Winemakers can either choose to use plant-based fining agents, or not to at all, as is the case with some natural wines that take on an unusual cloudy appearance.

Shafer
Touted as "one of the world's greatest wineries" by Robert Parker, Shafer's main focus has been on their luxuriant, richly textured Cabernet Sauvignon from their Stags Leap Vineyard, however father and son John and Doug Shafer also produce exceptional wines throughout Napa Valley and Carneros. We didn't offer Shafer last year, with the exception of the always phenomenal Hillside Select, as we found his 2015s a little too monolithic, and unreconstructed. However, the 2016s and 2017s are terrific with a freshness and precision that is really attractive.
