The future of Burgundy.
  •   Burgundy, France
  •   Chardonnay
  •   2017

Yann made his first vintage, aged just 13, and later in 2007 was taken under the wing of his mentor, visionary biodymanic winemaker Henry-Frederich Roch (before his untimely death, the co-owner of Domaine Romanée-Conti), and made responsible for Domaine Prieuré-Roch’s parcel of Chambertin Clos de Beze. Three years later, Yann launched his Domaine Recrue des Sens (the initials also standing for his revolutionary creed – “résiste; désobéir; sans soumettre.”) – to reclaim his family’s lost vineyards in the Hautes-Cotes de Nuits.

The wines are unlike any others in the region currently, although the influence of Prieuré-Roch is clear. Uncompromising and unforgettable, unsulphured but stable, funky yet focussed, these are thrilling, visceral Burgundies on the natural wine spectrum, which are yet delicious not divisive. Unquestionably a future icon, Yann’s philosophy represents an exciting paradigm shift and his wines an essential addition for the adventurous cellar.

Situated at 500 metres from Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru vines, on a limestone plateau. The soil is just 10-20 cm deep – in some places there is no topsoil at all – and the vines’ roots burrow deep into the bedrock. It was Yann’s grandfather who delineated this vineyard and Yann grew up here. Yann harvests this wine only when the all other wines are in barrel (except Les Ponts). This late harvest gives such small yields that the concentration gives a super intense flavour. Elevage: 24 months in barrel, 25% new oak.
