Domaine de Montille Hospices de Beaune 2019 Syndicate
Fancy having a top winemaker make a few cases especially for you?
For the first time we are offering you the opportunity to do just that by joining our two crowdfunded syndicates to purchase club barrels of Burgundy at the world famous Hospices de Beaune, with maturation and finishing by Brian Sieve, renowned winemaker at Domaine de Montille.
This will be a chance to join a unique club; winning at auction barrels of wine that only you and your fellow crowdfunding investors will own, safe in the knowledge that the élevage is in the hands of one of Burgundy’s top winemakers.
This could be the best Vintage since 1865
Tom Harrow of Honest Grapes explains how Burgundy 2019 could be best vintage since 1865 and with a third fewer barrels of Burgundy offered this year (589 this year vs 828 last year), bidding on the Hospices de Beaune auction is bound to be brisk. Read more here.
Each barrel makes 24 cases of 12 bottles, and one share is 24 bottles, so needs 12 Syndicate Members contributing approx. £2,400* per share.
These funds go towards the purchase of barrels of Burgundy at the auction in mid-November, their subsequent maturation at Domaine de Montille, bottling and In Bond delivery.
The deal is that we set a maximum for the bid at the auction and adjust the final share price once the auction is completed.
There are two syndicates:
- Red (2 barrels): Hopefully a Volnay, Pommard or Beaune Premier Cru hospices cuvée
- White (2 barrels): Hopefully a Meursault hospices cuvée
Two thirds of the red and half the white are already committed, so we’re looking for you to join us to complete the barrels.
Find out more from Tom or Nathan here by letting us know which syndicates you would like to join.
We’ll be offering the following extras for syndicate members:
- Visit the estate during the élevage
- Tasting events in London
- Large formats (magnums and jeroboams) and wooden boxes
If you are interested in sharing a complete barrel with friends (approx. £28,800), special labelling options are available.
The 2019 Vintage
Of the 2019 vintage, the world’s foremost Burgundy expert, Jasper Morris MW says:
“The weather has been beautiful every day while the grapes were being picked: in fact it has been beautiful almost every day across the last three months. Bright, sunny, dry and mostly not too hot… summer sunshine bathed the vineyards, providing impeccable ripening and entirely healthy grapes… yields are lower than hoped but the wines have extraordinary potential: very flavoursome, extremely concentrated and with good acidity levels to balance them.”
Meanwhile Hospice de Beaune winemaker, Ludivine Griveau, appointed for the 2015 vintage onwards, has overseen an impressive elevation in quality and consistency. She says: “I am very hopeful that 2019 will be among the greats”.
The Hospices de Beaune
Established in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, chancellor to the Duke of Burgundy, the Hospices de Beaune served as a charitable hospital for the poor until the Revolution. As a result Hospices de Beaune devised an annual wine auction in 1859, and it's been held every year since. Today, the wines are offered for sale from an estate made up of donations totaling more than 60 hectares of Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards and each year the Hospices de Beaune puts all the profits towards a chosen charity.
* As we are buying the wine at auction, the final price per share may be lower or higher. We’ll provide full details when you express interest in becoming a syndicate member.
